Hazel is a time-traveling strongarm for an organization known only as The Collective. Collective field agents are charged with protecting specific events in history: either by causing them to happen, or protecting the people who do, by any means necessary. Usually, deadly force is involved, and Hazel is good at what he does. VERY good.

But writing him off as a simple contract killer does a detriment to Hazel's character. He's got the mind of a philosopher and the heart of a teddy bear much less frightening than the mask he wears. He loves reality television because it highlights the simpler aspects of life that he doesn't get to enjoy. Beaurocracy and red tape drive him bananas, and pay cuts or perk removal are the sort of things that will get under his collar more than anything else. From his point of view, he does good honest work protecting the timeline, and feels he should be rewarded adequately and treated with respect. He's pleasant to anyone not directly in his line of fire, so to speak, and a genuinely affable guy. Keep away from his marks and you'll get along just fine.

GUNPLAY He's a crack shot with everything from pistols to machine guns, though he prefers a shotgun.

MELEE He's just as deadly without a weapon and can hold his own against superhumans to some extent (see below).

PHYSICAL BUFFS The Collective augments their field agents to be able to withstand a great amount of physical damage and stress, and seems to have enhanced their strength as well. In canon, Hazel goes toe to toe with a super-strong adversary and holds his own, even managing to suplex the person in question, who is easily bigger than him. This has its limits, and gunfire still does the usual amount of damage.
